Observation Narrative
Dominant tulip poplars (Liriodendron tulipifera) are straight and tall (average canopy height= 37 m.) in this secondary lower slope cove forest. Although this site does not appear to be especially fertile, species richness is relatively high (n=79) and there is good diversity of both woody and herbaceous species. Clintonia umbellata has remarkably high coverage (25-50%) in the herb layer.
Eastern slope of the Blue Ridge near Whites Gap. Plot located on a lower slope just west of Lady Slipper Run, at a point ca. 150 m SSW of where FR 76 (Jordan Road) crosses the stream.
